Summer Practice and Talk with Harry Simonsen

Start this beautiful summer day with refreshing serenity and a delightful learning experience. Today’s Sunday morning practice includes a few short and basic meditation practices such as voice and sitting meditation. Open to all and no experience necessary. The second half of today’s practice is a special talk with discussion.

Talk Title: Secular Buddhism is Not a Religion

Secular Buddhism arose when traditional Asian Buddhism migrated to the west and was subjected to a culture of scientism, individualism and democracy.  It discarded supernatural beings, karma and rebirth and focused on an ethical, practical framework for living one’s life in this world, here and now, free of greed, hatred, fear and selfishness.  What ensues is not a religion, but is it still true Buddhism?  Join our discussion and decide for yourself. Presented by Associate Teacher Harry Simonsen.

A short Introduction to Meditation Training session will be held before the gathering at 9:45 a.m. (if volunteers are available)
