Drawing from timeless wisdom and mindfulness practices, you’ll discover how to release the grip of fear, understand the nature of death, and cultivate a profound sense of peace in the present moment. This course offers practical guidance for transforming grief, accepting loss, and finding clarity in the face of uncertainty.
The class provides opportunities for meditation and reflection, helping you apply these teachings to your own life. You’ll explore questions like “Where do we come from? Where do we go?” and learn to face life’s challenges with courage and compassion. Whether you’re seeking to support others in times of loss, accompany the dying, or simply live with greater joy and freedom, this course will guide you on a journey of acceptance, forgiveness, and awakening.

The Course
Pre-requisites: none. —just an open mind and a willingness to learn.
Education: This course surveys the Mahayana Buddhist teachings, specifically from the wisdom tradition (prajnaparamita), on the nature of existence, fear, death, and hope. Referances are from the Heart, Diamond and other sutras.
Course Requirements: This introductory course has three components to be completed by the student.

Attendance & Commitment: If you live in Connecticut, all participants should strive to attend a Sunday morning Practice & Talk Meeting in Middletown, Connecticut. If you live outside of Connecticut, you should seek a local Buddhist group in your area (if there is one). This is part of the sedimentation process that allows us to assimilate the teachings into our daily life and to learn from other experienced teachers. Community practice is an important component of the Buddha’s Way to spiritual transformation. We cannot do it alone and we need the sangha (community of practitioners) to help us along the journey.
Discipline: In order to experience spiritual transformation and realize understanding one must be committed to the process such as practicing at home, work and in relationships, attending the classes, a local Buddhist practice meeting, and completing all of the assignments. This course is not a book discussion group but is a structured program to help you understand impermanance and death, and live the Buddha’s teachings in everyday life.
Assignments: All assignments are based on the readings and will be sent to students via e-mail. They must be completed and handed in at the time of the class. First homework assignment is due on the first-class meeting. All assignments will be collected and reviewed.
Book: Students are responsible to purchase their course book at a local bookseller or online. We suggest students purchase the book well in advance in order to allow enough time for delivery & the completion of assignment.
