Dhammanusati: Contemplative Practice

As an ancient practice of deep listening, Dhammanusati is proven to develop an authentic spiritual connection and transformation.

The central practices of Buddhism are meditation and Buddha-recitation (Nembutsu). Of the meditation practices, one of the most important practices is called Dhammanusati, the Contemplation of the Dharma. The practice consist of selecting a scriptural passage of the Buddha’s word (Buddhavacana) and quietly contemplate its meaning. Conducting this practice over time, the entrusting heart will necessarily flower from the depths of one’s being. It is said that to hear the Buddha’s word is to directly connect the practitioner to the Buddha himself. Dhammanusati allows an intimate dialogue between the reader and our living Buddha nature.

This presentation will combine Dhammanusati with the similar Benedictine Catholic practice called Lectio Divina (Divine Reading). Formalize in the 12th century, Lectio Divina comprises 4 steps: reading, meditating, praying, and contemplating. Our adapted Dhammanusati practice will have a modified set of steps combined with additional step, sharing.
